I discovered that upgrading to and installing the current version had changed the settings in the device tab so that either the wrong speakers or the wrong recording device was specified. I had to make a few other changes in the process, but they all boil down to restoring the ones I'd previously set.
You reach the device settings tab with F11, then control-tab until it's announced.
