Check to be sure that the gaps are not being added by the player you are using. 
 I know that when 
creating an audio CD, it is common practice to automatically insert silence 
between tracks that is not 
actually present in the individual files, and I believe I've seen this behavior 
when playing files from 
play lists but can't tell you for certain where to check.  Clearly if the 
silences are part of the MP3 
file, Dave's suggestion will work, although it might remove silence that you 
don't intend to remove.
