Well, it depends what you want.  I've used portables as table radios before.  
If you want something to match the woodwork in your kitchen, then these 
won't work, you are right.  I have not used the Sangean in a wood cabinet, and 
maybe that's going to do the job, but my experience has been that radios 
that look nice tend not to perform, althoug they can sound very nice.  <smile>
