I disagree as you've just proved my points in my opinion. You talk of the cheap USB speakers at $20.00 being a load of junk? Well their's no disputing that but have you heard a cheap $20.00 pair of speakers these days that connect to a sound card or Ipod and which are powered by mains power? I think you'll be quite impressed, no doubt about it we own the computer industry a lot when it comes to the way speakers have progressed in the last 10 or so years.
I bought a $20.00 pair of Logitech 2.1 speakers not long ago, the sound out of those is just fantastic. Now getting back to the topic of USB speakers? I have a set of USB speakers here which I use for my Mac, wonderful things but they are powered by mains power though the computer recognises them as a sound card or device, 100 watts per channel and you certainly won't! get that amount of power through a USB port alone if its going to provide power to your speakers.
