Hi, Critical stop sound is played when there is some kind of program error. The windows event you are looking for is default beep. hth.

Its funny, the sound that I'm trying to get rid of isn't actually there I'm trying to assign Ding.wav to Windows critical stop. This may be the wrong event. You know how when you're in an edit box, and when narrowing ding.wav is played, to indicate its empty? This is the sound I'm trying to fix. Hope this makes sense.

When you say "list of sounds" what list are you refering to?

I apologize if you already know this, but you can see the different events you can associate with different sounds in Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices. In the Sounds tab, there's a tree view with all of the different events. Note that this includes Windows events as well as events from other applications. You can use the Play button as you move through this list, and maybe you can identify which event is using bing.wav as well as the other sound you're looking for. You can also use the Browse button to find and use sounds (*.wav) in places other than the default.

hi list,
What event in XP uses ding.wav? think this is the event that's not changing when
trying to modify it.
In addition to my original message, I'm hearing a beep from my laptop, but its not a sound from my available choices when browsing. Best way i can describe it, is that it sounds like a sort of game: its not appearing in my list of sounds.
