Hi Brad,
Well, that was quite nice and detailed. It seems that arrowing and
tabs vary from computer to computer, but I was able to get to
everything. After I choose a sound and tab to ok and press enter it
kicks me out and into the regular control panel list. So I go back
in and try another sound but the first one seems to be gone. Anyway,
I'll just have to keep fooling around and see if I can get it to
work. You've given me the background and what it's all about but for
some reason my machine isn't acting quite the way yours apparently
does. Thanks so much for getting me this far and if or I should be
positive and say when I get it going I'll give you a big shout
Bud
. worries here's what to do:
1. Go to your Control Panel, to your Sounds and Audio link, it'll
open up to the Volume tab, just right arrow to Sounds tab.
2. Tab over four times and you'll be in a tree list of various
events that sounds are assigned . You ought heere "Windows Opened".
This doesn't mean when Windows is actually opened, it just means
the Windows tree list is opened. Other programs like I-Tunes,
Quickbooks and etc. will be in this list as well. As you arrow down
you'll see things like, Asterisk, close program, critical battery
alarm, etc. These are the events you can asign sounds to.
3. Arrow down until you hear "Close Program". then tab once and
you'll be in a list of sounds to choose from, or you ought be anyway.
4. Arrow down until you see something you might like. If you tab
around more you'll find a play/stop button to test the sound. You
can try this but I've found if you do this? You'll need to ALT TAB
off this Window and back again otherwise it just bonks at you.. no
big deal but just so you know in case it does same there.
5. If you like that sound just tab until you get to the OK button
and press enter.
Then in the main window of the sound tab press the Save As button.
Here you can either save it as a new scheme or override an existing
one. I don't think it'll let you override the default, I'm not sure
but I think it flagged me on that when I tried.
Then all you need to do is make sure your newly saved scheme is the
one set by looking in the list box by Alt down arrowing and setting
it, or if it shows up when you're in that box already its already
set to it. Now when you close Control Panel you should hear that sound.
Hope this works.

Thanks so much Brad, that sounds like just what I need. I did try
it but wasn't successful but will try again. Actually I'm not sure
how to select the sounds I want, do I just press spacebar on any of
them that I want to highlight them? It didn't say check when I did
the spacebar. I hate to impose on your good nature, but could you
just give it to me step by step so I would do it right? This old
88 year old brain doesn't work as good as it used to, but I think I
may be missing a step along the way there. Thanks so much for your
input and patience.

Bud,
Try going into the Sounds And Audio area, I'm assuming you're
using XP. Make Windows Default your scheme and then do a Save As.
Save it as Bud's Mix or something obvious. Then what I'd do is go
in and set it to play a sound for something like closing
a program, opening a program, and stuff like that. Then do
another Save As. When I did it it did not offer me any choices
and I had to type in my custom name again. It'll ask you if you
are sure you want to save it as that name, because one is already
named that. Press yes and then when you close the Sounds and Audio
window or Control Panel you ought hear the close program sound if
it worked. This way you ought have the default Windows
plus anything you customized while in there. When I was messign
around, I lossed sound as well so made my own and its fine now.

Christopher,
Yes, I did try out the various .wav files and they all play just
fine I also checked all the volumes and they are all set to
almost 500 and all the mutes are unchecked. Isn't that wild?
Thanks again.

Bud,
I also suppose you tried different sounds with no joy? You used
the preview button or what ever it is to make sure you can hear
the sounds and there's nothing wrong with the .wav files. Did
you try listening to the .wav files directly with WMP or Winamp?
Also, when you go into your volume settings, did you double
check to make sure that none of the different output sources
were at 0% volume or muted?
I know I'm tossing out the obvious here, but I don't know what
else to try.

Hi Christopher
I've done all that and still no sounds. It's got me baffled also.
If I ever find out the cause and get it fixed I'll let you
guys know what it was.
Thanks so much for your input.

So when you go into Sounds, you're double checking that
you've got sounds set up for Windows startup and shutdown,
right? If you make any changes, you're saving them and making
sure the updated or new sound scheme is the one that's
active, right? I assume so, so this is pretty strange.

Hi Christopher,
Yes, all the other sounds are working. I can play music and
I still get the sound when a download has completed. The
ones that I know are missing for sure are the sounds when
windows shuts down and when it comes on. Also the sound
when a piece of hardware is accidentally disconnected and
when it comes back on line I did check the scheme and the
audio device shows my sound card. It's got me pulling my
hair and I don['t really have much to pull these days.

and are you talking about all sounds or just Windows sounds
that you get when you maximize a window or close an
application? Is your screen reader still working? Can you still play music?
When you go into Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds, check to
make sure that your sound scheme hasn't changed. Ditto for
the default Windows audio output device.

Subject: lost my windows sounds
Hi gang,
I don't think I asked this question on this list because
I'm a pretty new
kid on the block, so if I did ask it before please forgive
me. A few months
ago all of a sudden I lost my windows sounds such as the
starting and
shutting down of windows, and the sound that indicates hardware
disconnecting or connecting. I've checked all the volumes
and made sure that
nothing is muted. If I check the list of sounds
they are all there and work My sound card is a S B live and I'm
running XP and windoweyes. I can't think of anything I
did at the time I
lost the sounds as far as downloading or installing any
program or anything
like that, they just all of a sudden disappeared. Any
thoughts would sure
be appreciated. I sure miss them.
Thanks..
