Bud,
Try going into the Sounds And Audio area, I'm assuming you're using
XP. Make Windows Default your scheme and then do a Save As. Save it
as Bud's Mix or something obvious. Then what I'd do is go in and set
it to play a sound for something like closing a program, opening a
program, and stuff like that. Then do another Save As. When I did
it it did not offer me any choices and I had to type in my custom
name again. It'll ask you if you are sure you want to save it as that
name, because one is already named that. Press yes and then when you
close the Sounds and Audio window or Control Panel you ought hear the
close program sound if it worked. This way you ought have the default
Windows plus anything you customized while in there. When I was
messign around, I lossed sound as well so made my own and its fine now.

Christopher,
Yes, I did try out the various .wav files and they all play just
fine I also checked all the volumes and they are all set to almost
500 and all the mutes are unchecked. Isn't that wild?
Thanks again.

Bud,
I also suppose you tried different sounds with no joy? You used the
preview button or what ever it is to make sure you can hear the
sounds and there's nothing wrong with the .wav files. Did you try
listening to the .wav files directly with WMP or Winamp?
Also, when you go into your volume settings, did you double check
to make sure that none of the different output sources were at 0%
volume or muted?
I know I'm tossing out the obvious here, but I don't know what else to try.

Hi Christopher
I've done all that and still no sounds. It's got me baffled also.
If I ever find out the cause and get it fixed I'll let you guys
know what it was.
Thanks so much for your input.

So when you go into Sounds, you're double checking that you've
got sounds set up for Windows startup and shutdown, right? If
you make any changes, you're saving them and making sure the
updated or new sound scheme is the one that's active, right? I
assume so, so this is pretty strange.

Hi Christopher,
Yes, all the other sounds are working. I can play music and I
still get the sound when a download has completed. The ones
that I know are missing for sure are the sounds when windows
shuts down and when it comes on. Also the sound when a piece
of hardware is accidentally disconnected and when it comes back
on line I did check the scheme and the audio device shows my
sound card. It's got me pulling my hair and I don['t really
have much to pull these days.

and are you talking about all sounds or just Windows sounds
that you get when you maximize a window or close an
application? Is your screen reader still working? Can you still play music?
When you go into Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds, check to
make sure that your sound scheme hasn't changed. Ditto for the
default Windows audio output device.

Bud,
Which operating system are you using? If XP, did you go to

Subject: lost my windows sounds
Hi gang,
I don't think I asked this question on this list because I'm
a pretty new
kid on the block, so if I did ask it before please forgive
me. A few months
ago all of a sudden I lost my windows sounds such as the starting and
shutting down of windows, and the sound that indicates hardware
disconnecting or connecting. I've checked all the volumes and
made sure that
nothing is muted. If I check the list of sounds
they are all there and work My sound card is a S B live and I'm
running XP and windoweyes. I can't think of anything I did
at the time I
lost the sounds as far as downloading or installing any
program or anything
like that, they just all of a sudden disappeared. Any
thoughts would sure
be appreciated. I sure miss them.
Thanks..
