Yeah, but the fact that an actual popular company is doing this, without us
having to instal alternate firmware - that's a step in the right direction.
Might not be a revolution, but it sure beats what most companies are doing,
and we don't have to use rockbox if we don't want to - but I like
rockbox..lol.

Well, I agree it's a good development, but I wouldn't say what Apple is
doing is revolutionary. Remember Rock box has used this technology for
years. I installed rockbox on my first portable media player in 2007 and
using talking clips to speak the menus, folders and file names wasn't new
then. Right now I have Rockbox running on a 30G iRiver, and I'm using
Samantha or Jill for my voice. It's one of those voices that came with JFW
8. Again, don't get me wrong, this is a great development, and I encourage
Apple to continue down this path, but their claims of the first talking
portable media player are distorted and the technology they're using isn't
revolutionary.

Still, though, even if speach isn't built in, and even if you have to use
ms sam, your still getting speech - which is quite a revolution. And
unless my ipod video's hard drive fails, it will be lasting a long time
to come- the only thing I might even replace would be the battery.
I really want an 80 gb ipod video, though.

I couldn't find the story at that URL either, so I used Google and found
the following URL http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/features.html.
Following the link labeled "Learn more about VoiceOver" also lead to
information on how this works, which BTW, seems to be the same way it
works on the iPod Nano.

And OK, I might be a thicko, likely I am, but I couldn't really find
the
story that goes with this post on the Lioncourt site. Could some one
spell
it out a bit to me, please?
I'm certainly not a detractor from all things Apple, even if they
still,
after seeing the accessability light, still get some things woefully
wrong!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, I got the picture that most of the
controls
are on the ear buds that come with this device. If so, that's a show
stopper right there and right now, especially for some of us who can't
wear
ear buds or prefer the old fashioned type head sets.

It sounds like a nice little player. It wasn't made clear in the
article how the text -to-speech is implemented though, whether it is
built-in or transferred.
I also followed the link to the press release and found a link to
some
interesting facts about lithium-polymer batteries, charging cycles,
running time and lifespan.
