Hi, Steve,
I can only speak to the operation of the Sony ICD-B25 which is about
7 years old now. It is quite easy to use with the audio beeps
function turned on (which is by default). The clock and alarm
functions are totally inaccessible but all the basic and intermediate
functions are fine, such as:
record, stop, playback and skip forward and back;
splitting a recording, joining 2 recordings, erasing a recording;
moving from one folder to another, and so on.
But I cannot say what features remain accessible in currently-available models.
As for price, 7 years ago I paid about $75 but that's not going to
tell you what they cost today since recording capacities have
improved so dramatically and features added like stereo recording.

I'm a little late on this thread. I have an older Sony ICD-B25
voice recorder which does append. On the hunch that Sony still
makes recorders with this feature I checked out the first one I
found on Amazon:
Sony ICD-P520 Digital Voice Recorder with 256 MB Built-in Flash
Memory and USB
and found this in its feature list:
* Add Recording: Insert and add additional information to any
message without affecting the original.

But if you're just looking for a voice recorder, the Plextalk or
the Stream might be overkill, depending on the needs.
