That's interesting because a friend of mine said she hasn't ever had to
format a card either. 
I wonder how the proper folder structure gets on those cards if they're
never formatted.

I'm using a 32 gig SD HC card with no problem.  It takes a little time to
load large amounts of files, but once that's done things work quite quickly
and normally.

I can't answer the formatting question, since all the cards I use worked
right away.
