Echoing Pam and others here, I wouldn't burden myself with another mic. For
what it does and what it is advertised to do, the internal mic is more than
sufficient.

To amplify on what has been discussed thus far, I can add my own
agreement. Ray has given us a fine sample of a lecture recorded under
less than ideal conditions.

I can say from personal experience that the Stream has made perfectly
adequate recordings of the private Pilates and physical therapy sessions
I have recorded for use at home. True, the class is private so the
instructor and I are working at very close range, but there are times
when I may move away from the Stream, forgetting to pick it up in this
large studio, and there may be other small groups working nearby, and
there is absolutely no problem following the instructions later.

Also, I recorded some committee dinner meetings in which we were working
on publicity for a fine Australian guitarist visiting Visalia. The
conversation was often quite animated, and again, I was able to later
extract the information I needed quite easily. What the Stream did not
record well was a song or two from the rehearsal by the opening band
immediately after the meeting. I did not expect it to record music
well, but decided to let it go just to see what would happen. The
rehearsal was in the next room in the single-family home, and the music
was over-modulated and distorted. Had I used my Edirol R9 or Dave's
Olympus DS50 the quality would certainly have been most adequate for an
on-the-fly recording. We have used those machines for recording music
in party settings. But remember, music wasn't what we were after, nor
is the person seeking to record a lecture, so I must totally agree with
the positive assessments here.

Pam

I've played around here with a few microphones and didn't see any
improvement. The internal mic is quite sensitive and does a very good
job.

I have never used an external mike with the Stream, so I can't say. I'm
guessing that it would depend on the quality of your mike, but that's
just a guess. I don't want to make a statement I can't back up.
