Ray Good question !
I am not a user of Total Recorder so I cannot comment on whether TR has these features or not. Among the features I find invaluable in Replay AV are the following: (1) ability to record a stream prior to its reaching the sound card. (2) ability to record multiple streams simultaneiously and on a recurring schedule. (3) A feature allowing one to use RAV both as a recorder and a radio tuner independently and simultaneously. (4) An url finder feature allowing one to uncover stream urls that are often embedded in complex urls. To me, this would be well worth the $50 or so price tag for the product. (5) A built-in file converter which can be set to automatically convert recorded streams into the desired media format. (6) An easy to use interface which follows conventional Windows menu structure. (7) Each scheduled entry can be individually managed for file conversion, how long recordings are maintained, and with the ability to edit tags. (8) A wide variety of general program settings including the customization of names of created files. These general settings include the ability to determine how the program will handle stream interruptions and how many times to attempt reconnects. These are, off the top of my head, some of the many reasons why I value and use RAV daily. Perhaps Total Recorder users can comment on whether TR offers some or all of the above and what other features they value. That may be the best way for a valid comparison of the 2 programs. For some, having both programs on one's system may be a good choice. While I do not have TR on my pcs, I do have a 2nd audio stream recorder, namely, RadioTime's RedButton on my system. It, however, has a secondary role these days principally due to RAV doing a better job for my needs and being more flexible to use. Perhaps the feature that I do value in RedButton is the ability of the program to wake itself up from hibernate or standby to begin its recording. For that reason, I do have it programmed to record something each morning at the same time RAV is scheduled to make its initial recording. Here is a 9th feature I do find convenient in RAV: (9) The program's ability to modify its recording schedule based on the time zone set in the pc clock. This allowed me this past winter to take a pc from the Central time to the eastern time zone of Florida and back home again without having to hand modify a multitude of recording schedules.
