Hi Lauren: The problem is the media player requires files call codecs codec stads for code decoder, dvds, and other files like mp3 and so forth use special decoders to play. If one wishes to play dvd's on Media Player you need to find or purchase the dvd codec.
Fortunately there is a solution. If you visit videolan.org and download vlc media player, it is accessible and it plays just about all the files known to multimedia, including dvd. No charge, no extra downloading of codecs. This problem you have is not uncommon. It was a regular call to tech support where I work, until I installed vlc media player and directed folks to ignore the Microsoft prompts to play with Windows Media player. Give it a try.
