You're playing or skimming through a track and you hear a pop, crackle or such like? Stop the playback immediately after you hear the noise and press "p", this makes a selection round the noise and you can press "shift-P" to play back the noise as though it were pencilled out, if you don't like it then press "command-z" to undo what you've done, adjust further settings in preferences so how neat is that? The selection around the sound for pencilling is about a quarter of a second but this can be changed in preferences.
