Hay Rick, you forgot that with the DS-50 you also get that nice carrying case. That isn't included in the DS-40 or DS-30 either.

It plugs into where the detachable stereo mic plugs into and then the stereo mic now plug into the other end of the remote. Personally, I like having the 1GB of storage, but that of course is just personal preference.
