High Tyler, I am a DJ myself. I can tell you what a mixer is and what it does. Think about having a preamp that has many inputs for each audio source. In a home stereo, all of the audio sources are selected by some kind of a selector switch. Now lets replace the source selector switch with volume control knobs for each source. Now that you have a volume control knob for each audio source, you can play 2 CD's or records back to back if you wanted to. And or, you can do something that is called looping. The microphone just lets you talk over the music wile it's playing. This is called a voice over. For microphones, there are two kinds of connections. There is the 1-4th inch connecter, and the XLR connecter. The impedance are different on both of these connecters. The XLR is high impedance, the 1-4th inch is low impedance. There is no real difference in the way these 2 microphones pick up sound. They both work on the same principle. Basically, a mixer lets you mix sound. I hope this info really helps you a whole bunch. And I hope now you have a better understanding of what this is.
