Xitle (I'm not sure of the spelling) makes a hi-fi digital/analog
converter for about $50 that connects to a usb port and has rca
connectors at the far end.  It's pretty slick.

Just the concept of conversion splitting and runing a preamplified
signal into it poses distorsion and volume differences.
