While the volume levels were correct all along, what caused the problem
was that the appropriate setting required for recording wasn't checked.
For the benefit of readers, here is how I stumbled upon the solution.
Knowing that apparently nothing would record, I decided to attempt to have
my RedButton software attempt to record WGN, Chicago.
Not surprisingly, the recording wouldn't commence.
I went into the pc's sound manager and looked for various recording
property check boxes for line in, mike, cd, etc.
Having no idea which might impact the recording of internet streams, I one
by one attempted to check the boxes (as you guessed, Kelley, all were
unchecked).
RedButton allows one to monitor what is being recorded, assuming something
is recording, of course.
Suddenly, out of the blue, I heard the dignified voice of Milt Rosenberg
interviewing someone on "Extension 720" as a highlight which WGN streams
when it cannot stream regular programming due to Cubs baseball.
I checked, to make certain, and indeed iI had a recording on the hd.
I can tell everyone that I have never, in the 35 or so years that Milt has
hosted "Extension 720" been so elated to hear the U of Chicago psychology
prof interview anyone <grin>!!
And, oh yes, I saved the settings into the Quickmix default file
default.qmx
which now, thanks to a msg posted by Sarah Alawami last week, starts as
the notebook starts up and now is also available via the desktop.
And, I'll be doing an image of that hd later today in the event we ever
have to do a total system restore.
So, once again, Kelley, thanks for asking the right questions which
changed my focus from tweeking MP3 Directcut to what was required,
enabling the pc itself to record.
