Don't know of any to have it record only when a source is available. As for
the rest, it's pretty easy. Make sure your time meters are turned off in the
record mode. I believe there are settings for this in preferences. Second,
when you go into record mode, the controls are fairly straightforward but you
might find them quicker by back tabbing. You can put in end time and record
for a specific amount of time if you set the controls to record for length of
time.
I have not followed this thread and I don't use JFW, which is why I haven't
been more explicit.

I'm about ready to chuck soundforge8. I've tried everything everyone has
suggested to get a recording started and it hasn't worked. I've only been
able to record in sound forge 5 but gave it up because it doesn't have a
fast forward and rewind feature. Nor could I find out how to restrict the
recording to a particular length and have it only record when there is a
sound source.
