JG, I used to think like you, and, since I had the room on my external 300gig Maxtor, I figured, why lose anything I didn't have to, and I ripped all my CDs as .wavs. But, recently, my brother uploaded to me 5gigs of .m4a files (128kbps) from his ipod. I was very impressed with the quality, and, since I was running out of room on my Maxtor, I converted all my wavs to m4as. They take up a bit more than a tenth of the room the wavs did, and I'm still quite happy with the sound quality. If I ever resolve every other computer issue, and I have far more time than I know what to do with, I might well re-rip everything as .wmas at 192KBPS. But, until then, . . . Sometimes, while I'm listening to these m4a files, I go looking around my stereo, trying to find where I left the jewel case. <grin>
