You can do one of two things.

1. after highlighting the file press
F2 to see the complete file name. This is normally used for editing a
filename.

2. If you are runningwin98 go into the view menu and press o for folder
optionss. If win2k or higher enter the tools menu and press o to enter
folder options.
Once there press ctrl+tab to get to the view tab then tab to the tree view
arrow down or press h for "hide known file extentions" be sure its
unchecked
also you will want your folders in detail mode rather than list. To know
which mode you are in open a folder, if you can arrow left or right through
filenames you are in list mode. List mode gives you the full filename but
not the extention. to change to detail mode which aligns the files
vertically, enter the view menu and press d.

If we can't look at ourselves, and ask, why?
then where does the learning start?

I am in my music folder and am attempting to determine whether the file is
an mmp3 file or an audio file. Ocassionally, I get a message stating that
it is an mp3 file. I am trying to determine what type of file when no
message is spoken. I am sorry I can't be more explicit.
