If the file name is not displayed when the file name is displayed then you:
Highlight the file
Go to the file menu
Go to properties at the bottom of the file menu
When the window opens use the tabs at the top of the page and click on General and
Then you will be told the size of the file the File type and what program it opens with

I am aware of the fact that if it has an extension it is what ever the
extension indicates. However, how do you know the file type is when it
doesn't have an extension?
