I'd be surprised if Media Player was copying files from source to the hard drive. It shouldn't need to do this to create a playlist. The problem most likely lies with the install of media player itself or some quirk with your system, maybe not enough RAM or processor power?
Have you tried using Winamp? It seems a lot less processor intensive and sounds every bit as good if not better.
