OK, I've not been paying much attention to this thread. However, this may be kind of neat... I had been using a Revox Tuner and VCR to record our local NPR station's broadcast of "Blues Before Sunrise"--a wonderful 5-hour program that comes on every Saturday night. Would the "RockBox" (spelling?) software and one of these units be able to handle a project such as that, and do they provide a way to either move files to the Hard Drive for editing and CD-Production for one's future enjoyment? ick On Tue, 1 Jun 2004 18:42:17 -0400, Aman Singer wrote: Hi, Nick. First, you asked My question is, are there some hidden system files the system expects to see on drives put in by the manufacturer. Not according to the users who have put in their own drives. You asked Next, how easy would it be to exchange the drive--as the system is a "black box" not a general purpose PC. The folks who have done it say it's quite simple. I've never done it myself, so have no experience to tell you of. See the site for info on how to do it. You said Finally, were I the manufacturer, I would do something to make the system more proprietary than that, or someone could shove in a really big drive, and what would I be able to sell as new and improved--other than software/firmware upgrades at very little profit as contrasted with whole systems. What Archos has done is to sell units with more functionality, rather than necessarily bigger drives. That is, the recorders record, the FM recorders can record and have an FM radio, and the V2 recorders are much smaller and have somewhat more battery life. Firmware is in ROM. It is a form of software, but is called "firmware" because it used to be burned into ROM, now it is flashed into newer forms of rewritable ROM/Flashed...
