I should have mentioned... I found the documentation atop each of these prototypes to be more than enough to get going with coding (I suspect you were looking at the wrong contacts.h file if you came across it at all). I do remember, however, having to play with the stuff a bit before getting it to work.
Part of this "play" was fooling around with the Contacts application on my Treo 650, typing letters and noting what was being displayed in its real-time find.
