That could well be, but traditionally the IETF does
sometimes standardize protocols that do basically the
same things and might be seen as competing.  Our
job is to specify useful things (interoperable useful
things), and I don't think the IETF has ever made it
our job to choose a winner - we let the market choose.

That said, I think the process here has been very very
badly botched.  Very.
