K8s scenario has two ways to be deployed, baremetal deploy (install k8s on 3+2
nodes) and virtual deploy (install k8s on VMs launched on jump server). The
nodes and VMs number need not to be exactly 3+2, no ha is also supported.

Harry,
Is compass installing Openstack (aka OPNFV) on these 3+2 servers in the
typical 3-node-HA controller and 2 compute nodes?
Or is it installing k8s on the 5 nodes?

Thanks,
Joe

Maybe to use “Node” is more understandable here. Say a six servers’ cluster,
there is a blade used as a jump server and other five blades will be nodes to
host the infra layer. This is exactly how we deployed in our lab. So in the end
six server will be one Ubuntu (jump host) and five CentOS (3+2 multi-node
cluster).

Harry,
I’m a little confused - what is the host OS? If jump host is ubuntu, then
what is the host that is running Centos?

Thanks,
Joe

Sorry, joe. I didn’t make it clear there. I mean the host OS can only be centos
for now, the jump host OS compass installer requires is still Ubuntu. The
build.sh will check the cpu architecture then build things accordingly. Here is
a link of Jenkins output of k8 scenario on arm for compass:
https://build.opnfv.org/ci/job/container4nfv-k8-sriov-nofeature-noha-virtual-daily-master/24/consoleFull
. In this output aarch64 is used instead of amd64.

Harry,
Just re-read this and noticed I missed a big important thing.
This supports only centos7 on arm, for now.

My jump server is currently running ubuntu 16.04.
I probably won’t tear the jump server down and re-deploy centos7 on it at
this point.
Does this use-case of Compass result in a VM being deployed? I’m just
curious if it’s worth trying this on a VM in my open stack environment.

Thanks,
Joe

OpenStack is not involved here, just install kubernetes on baremetal server.
Compass supports both CentOS and Ubuntu in other scenarios but this scenario
for ARM is relatively new and only support centos7 for now. Another thing is
some servers may require dedicated OS, there is a yaml file to specify which
exact OS will be built into compass tar ball then used during deploy process.

Thanks, Harry. That sounds pretty cool.

Does this install open stack as well? Or does it just install k8s on an open
stack environment?
Also, I see something that says “OS_VERSION=centos7” - is that what hosts the
k8s master and node?

Thanks,
Joe
