In this session [1] we discussed what has been tried to have in OpenStack the
last year for planned host maintenance. Why changes were not done and what next
to move this topic forwards.

Shortly what was tried in the past year and why it did not realize:
- There was discussions with OpenStack operators [2] [3] what they would like
to have and accordingly discussions with OpenStack Nova project to have
maintenance enhanced in the project. Also surely considering the requirements
coming from OPNFV Doctor project. At the end it was seen that the functionality
should not reside in Nova, but in external tool without changes to Nova [4]
- OpenStack Craton - Fleet Management tool [5] was a perfect place to be
considered to have planned host maintenance. It had great overall cloud
topology awareness and could have hosted this feature. While planning of having
this done there started quite soon after OpenStack Barcelona summit, before
things were proceeding to implementation the OSIC funding was cut and all
developers left the project. Without the project core and having several
companies to support the project this became a not so good place to continue
with the vision [6]

What next:
- Scope to start with should be the whole compute host. Later on to planned
maintenance on other things, like controllers, switches or smaller parts inside
compute that do not require shutting down the whole host.
- It remained unclear where to go next. It is not a self-evident how much
should be in VIM and on upper layer. We had a great demo [7] over planned
maintenance in the summit, but while it was nice in many aspects it was still
fairly limited with the interfaces. This could be approach to be used, but it
would still need more fine-grained information to be passed between admin and
application.
- ManageIQ was also mentioned to be considered [8]
