I am not a core developer, but having used OpenWRT in production for quite a while I would be interested in seeing the details of this. Although many of my setups had NOR/NAND to spare, so using a double image (one running, one upgrading to) was an option, I'm still interested in this, and getting some tlc into sysupgrade... Posting it online might trigger interest from others anyway, so if you can, making this code publicly available would be great!
