And now I see that Magic SysRQ was already there, and the system still
did not recover. So, it seems I have an (intermittent?) issue with
sysupgrade sometimes crashing the system so hard that even SysRQ/reboot
isn't helping.

So, where do i go from here? Serial console is not an option,
network-wise there is no response from the system (no ping, no nothing)
so, at some point I'm at a loss for how to debug this. Suggestions are
welcome, otherwise I'll have to find another way to deal with upgrades,
and that doesn't make me too happy.
