If you have a working script, then why not use that?

(And when systemd is involved, nothing is as it seems - it will "protect"
directories, according to unit file config, so you will see a private
/tmp file, might not be able to access /home/* at all, etc. - but I can
not help you debug systemd, as I do not use it and have little first-hand
experience with it)
