I don't think SNMP would be appropriate. For one thing SNMPv1/v2c are highly insecure, and SNMPv3 isn't widely used due to its security complexity. A better choice might be protocols such CIM or rsyslog. What kind of data are you interested in monitoring? You can probably already do what you need without adding a new protocol.
