Is this causing crashes with statically-linked, dynamically-linked, or
both? (And what kinds of crashes? Knowing something about what's
going on could allow for the MingW environment to be tweaked, as long
as it's still compiling and linking in an appropriate fashion?)

Also, is any thought going toward the ability to specify compiler
flags in the environment for those systems (such as HP/UX) which need
different parameters for 32- and 64-bit builds?

The reorganization of the security boundary is causing conflicts betwen MingW
and VC++ resulting in crashes in bizarre places. It is quite possible that this
will mean that a VC++ build is no longer possible without a followup
validation.
