Why would a replacement be needed? My understanding, albeit not as a
lawyer and outside the US is that after patent expiry any implementation
can be used including OpenSSL's internal one which everyone outside the
US uses currently.

There is some documentation which is still usable in doc/ssleay.txt for
some functions. You may well find that the odd extra parameter has been
added along the way though.

Assisting with documentation: be careful it doesn't count as "technical
assistance" :-(
