another side of this issue might also be the notoriously bad opengl support from apple. this came to light when the steam platform was released earlier this year for mac. people saw that performance under mac was about 1/3 compared to the same games under windows. i believe the conclusion was that apple has been neglecting their opengl support due to the lack of games and or customer demand for 3d technology.
