As sad as it is to see people leave the Solaris Kernel development team, you
have to remember that there are a lot of other engineers in that team. People
always leave when there is an acquisition and it's hard to hold onto folks. I
was sad with Richard McDougall left Sun for VMware. But Solaris is still around
and things are still improving. So while it's sad to see senior folks leave
here
and there, it just enables those behind the scenes and new guys to step up and
do new and interesting stuff. Look at Dan Price, I remember way back in 2002
seeing and hearing about him for the first time when he presented the
p-commands
in Solaris 9. Look at what he's done since then! So I really don't believe all
the FUD that somehow Solaris development will die out or suffer to the point of
capitulation because a hand full of the kernel engineers leave. I wouldn't be
surprised if some of them return. I've seen plenty of folks that left Sun that
have returned to Oracle.

As to the kernel engineers that will work on OpenSolaris/Ilumos, etc.. I'm glad
to see they'll continue to contribute. The OpenSolaris community really needs
some kernel engineers out in the wild and not in a silo at a big company. I
always felt that OpenSolaris was suffering by not having enough contributors
familiar with the codebase. Now that's no longer an issue.

Well...with top solaris engineers,like, Bonwick,etc.leaving Oacle. I think it
will probably force Oracle to reopensource solaris kernel, because i think in
this time in age, it will be hard for oracle to find engineers, who are able to
write and maintain complex kernel code like these devs who left were putting
out..

quote from gadamore:

"
On the other hand, I think illumos may be the place where Solaris innovation
happens, more so than at Oracle, even sooner than I previously expected. "
