Thanks for all the replies. I hadn't seen any NWAM success stories online, but now I know that they're out there. I've also cleared up some misconceptions about the size of Solaris 10.
I don't think that I'll stick with OpenSolaris, but the problem is more with my preconceptions than with the software. If I were looking for a replacement for, say, Ubuntu, then OpenSolaris would have blown me away. Ubuntu has the same issues with my wifi card (and the same lack of development tools), and OpenSolaris feels much more finished and complete than the latest Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I was looking for a NetBSD replacement - something more technical and minimal. Reading about the former Sun Express Developer Edition also led me to expect all this: http://developers.sun.com/sxde/features.jsp. Realistically, that would probably have to be distributed as a DVD anyway, since it looks like to much to fit on a CD. I'll definitely keep an eye on OpenSolaris, and it'll probably earn a VirtualBox machine for a long time to come.
