If they're both in Java anyway, it would be nice if they worked
client/server (communicating with serialized objects maybe),
so that one could securely authenticate to, view, and configure remote
systems without the bandwidth of X11 display-back (let alone X11
tunnelled through ssh).

If that's going to happen (and it's a pretty obvious thought that
hadn't poked its way into my own consciousness yet) then I guess
JMX would be the technology. It's used by chime for remoting,
and I've been encouraged to do the same for jkstat.
