Perhaps because you mostly know Sun engineers who were trained using
TeamWare, where "workspace" is synonymous with what most other SCM
systems call "repository" and the root of your workspace is clearly
the top level directory of the tree created by "workspace create"
and "bringover" - not quite as obvious when you get your code from
a tarball instead. (Being one of those Sun engineers, it seems
obvious to me too, but I've worked with enough people who only use
other SCM's to understand it's not as common a term in the rest of
the world.)
You're quite correct - I have been stuck in my homogenous
tower for quite a while now :-)
