I would disagree, I tend to think (though I'm guilty of not doing so), that doing as much work as is possible on the outside, and making the sponsors role easier is generally worthwhile. If sponsorship is more chore-like than it has to be, less and less people will be willing to do it, and as you said, once an SCM presents itself, that work will have to be done on the outside anyway, so why not do it now and get in the habit of it?
