When you made this test, did you disable any hardware in the bios? In your initial email you said: "When I try to install Opensolaris b38 the machine hangs after the message Configuring Devices.". Configuring devices should happen before we get to the "1. Solaris Interactive (default) ..." prompt. For verifying if you run into bug 6414472 - using kmdb and a breakpoint at ata_id_common - you should have all the hardware enabled in the bios !
