In r1895-1897, I have done most of what I said I would do above, but --
amusingly -- I did not get around to revisiting the typedef sections.

I intend to end all future "style wars" by updating the guide once a
consensus has been reached by the community.  [[This includes any flames
sparked by my updates to the guide.]]  If agreement proves intractable,
the maintainers may need to make executive decisions.

I hope this will help improve the code over time.
