wrong # args: should be "target [OLDSYNTAX] ?TYPE? ?ENDIAN? ?CHAIN- POSITION? this is infact incorrect as the old syntax only had 3 required args - the

The attached patch makes the target syntax parsing much more robust and makes the variant optional again.
