Hi Les,
I did a bit of black magic vodoo and whoooo:
http://www.opennms.org/wiki/RRD_performance_fundamentals#Tuning
Well, the vodoo was just to look into the tuning guide. This function is there
since quite a while ("This page was last modified on 10 August 2009, at 13:41").
Just try it and report if it shows some significant changes in i/o. I changed
this value some years ago when there wasn't much load on the system so I can't
tell anything about the difference.

Something that would make a huge difference for me would be to never
write updates if the values have always been 0. I want to collect
switch port interface data without having to manually track which ports
are connected so I have 'snmpStorageFlag=all'. There are a lot of
unused interface both on switches and hosts so this makes for a lot of
wasted effort updating meaningless and predictable data - and this
probably isn't an uncommon scenario. If there were some clever way to
deduce the 'always zero' status from the directory/inode properties, the
whole read/write cycle could be skipped until a non-zero value is collected.
