Thank you to everyone who responded regarding this issue. I think this would be a useful upgrade to OpenMeetings at some point, since it would improve the end user experience. I am not an engineer so I don't claim to have an understanding of the mechanics of making this happen. While this is not critical for my purposes, I would be happy to do what I can to make it happen.
