The current version (what you called "version 2" in the Description) looks good to me. Despite my initial concern when you first mentioned it, it's actually _less_ intrusive than "version 1" and seems like the right approach: handle `D3DERR_DEVICEHUNG` in the same manner as `D3DERR_DEVICEREMOVED`.
