so OI is focused only on desktop?
No, OI is the server part PLUS desktop. We use single image OI for
both our desktops and servers for various purposes.
ok, thought, but was suddenly unclear because of the last posting
OI supports real ACLs because it builds on stock illumos.
sure, and illumos based with zfs underneath is the only really acl
capable base. No linux can offer that. Actually linux tries to
revoke ancient sun technology for acl emulation only to have a
reason to not use zfs and be able to stick with nfsv3, at least
that is what it looks like to me. I could be wrong on that but I
do prefer OI as an acl/nfsv4 backend system in a windows environent
And for the sparc systems, there is nothing that stable as sparc
hardware. and obp on it is far more comfortable as this BIOS stuff.
one doen't realy have a text console on off the shelf BIOS boxes
Used sparc T2 boxes are damm cheap to get if one isn't just giving
them out nothing
We dumped our sparcs 25 years ago because already then they were a
factor of 6 too slow compared to the then recent DEC hardware (ES40),
which was superseeded by even faster Sun x86 machines (Blade 8000).
Cannot comprehend why anyone would stick to SPARC today except for
computer museum show cases ...
well, ever worked on a reacent sparc box? they feel so much ahead.
and they are logical partitionable. Not the hassle with acpi view
on devices and the like. Openprom is so much more comfortable in
debugging etc.
Even PPC10 is fast, eventhough there is no reacent solaris running.
I remember that IBM had Opensolaris on their Z-Series those days ago...
But we are talking about desktop right now, so let me stop dreaming:)
yes, sunray capability in OI is definitly on my wishlist.
Sunray support dropped out of oracle solaris with 11.4, 11.3 is the
last os supporting that
and, talking of speed and meteorological modelling, cuda support would
be great. Don't really know if that counts for desktop or backend, we
have our linux-gpu-servers in a rack and well cooled. I would love to
have those running OI underneath, would make the world simpler and more
reliable
