Hi,

dived into the audio startup of mate, it looks like the pulseaudio
user service process is not started at all, so the pactl calls in
/usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11 (which is called in the 'personal startup
applications' set) fail. I hacked the 'puseaudio --start' call into
that script, which does not work ideal, but after the second login
(when a leftover pulseaudio user process is still running) most
functionality works (on some machines the master volume does not
affect firefox sound, it only mutes or unmutes). Also missing is
the org.mate.desktop.sound mixer-device, which is empty, but should
have '/dev/mixer' as default (configure in dconf).
The pactl calls, the mate-volume-control and gvfs-hal-volume-monitor
should wait somehow on the pulseaudio daemon process to start.
