A look at freebsd is the urtwn driver the right choise for this device. With 
the illumos urtwn driver I use Edimax 7811 V1 successfull which is a RTL8192CU 
chip. Your DWA-171 seems to be a RTL8812AU chip which is not implemented in the 
illumous urtwn driver.
I can't find a rtl dirver anywhere, but generally begins the names of USB 
drivers with letter u (urtwn), without the u it is a driver for PCI cards (at 
least in the BSD world).
Some additional dirvers are on http://freenicdrivers.la.coocan.jp/ but there 
also no driver for the RTL8812AU chips.
