I'm wondering if that is what is being triggered?

This feels more like a Solaris/Illumos implementation bug to me.

I also had difficultly negotating the connection with my local Dovecot server in that it appeared to be stuck while retrieving the (self-signed) certificate from the server. It did succeed after several tries and a few minutes.

Thunderbird has never seemed like well written software to me, but there are not many viable options under Linux, and for Illumos/OI it is a port of code targeting Linux.

Meanwhile, I am extremely happy with text-based Pine/Alpine, for which I don't see any OI packages offered.
